THE HEWITT NATIONAL
CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPS

No79 leads Mark Hucklebridge No22
and Hans Kaashoek No1 into the first turn
HELD AT CHAVENAGE ON SUNDAY 18TH
FEBRUARY2007
PROMOTED BY THE MIDWEST MCC.
REPORT AND PICS BY MIKE WOOD
Despite still suffering from a sore hand after recently breaking his
finger, Cornishman Jason Fraser blasted his two-stroke Husqvarna to a great win at
Chavenage, near Tetbury on Sunday. In what was the first event in a nine round series supported by Hewitt International Salvage
Management, Fraser completed eleven laps of the seven mile Gloucestershire
circuit, finishing just under two minutes ahead of eventual runner-up Brad
Williams. Also competing at Chavenage was Wiltshire motocross star Mark
Hucklebridge, getting in some vital stamina training with the major 2007 outdoor racing season about to explode into
action. Admitting to being very impressed by the speed of the fast enduro
boy's, Hucklebridge matched Fraser's and Williams lap total for an eventual third place
finish, but naturally riding with caution to thus avoid any unwanted injury before the 2007 campaign
ignites, it meant that he was nearly seven minutes down on the eventual winner at the completion of three hours of riding.

With the Hewitt National Cross Country Championship organised by the go-ahead Midwest MCC and offering a total prize fund of £7000,a entry of nearly 250 riders were attracted to
Chavenage. Despite recent snow, rain and hail, conditions for Sunday's event were surprisingly good as Arran Poolman grabbed the holeshot to lead the Expert class away into the distance whilst for fellow competitor Dave Nuttall the start proved rather
disastrous. Unable to fire his Husaberg into life, he completed his first lap already eleven minutes behind
Fraser.
Undeterred Dave did still complete a total of nine laps for 24th
spot. Up at the front, Fraser also posted the fastest lap of the day, a storming 15 minutes 29 seconds on his 10th
circuit. With early leader Poolman dropping down to 7th,Keith Jenkins, Lewis King and Jamie Padget moved in the opposite direction to earn
4th, 5th and 6th places respectively.
In the Clubman Two-stroke class former top youth rider and current AMCA motocross Expert Stuart Rawlings took the
win. The Swindon based rider was a full lap ahead of his closest challengers Martin
Cheeseman, Richard Maisey, Terry Beecham and Roger Billam. Clubman Four-stroke honours went to David Wathen who completed nine Chavenage
laps, the same total as Malcolm Lean, Ian Wathen, Matthew Bath, Peter Kyte,
Ian Shuttleworth and Richard Edwards. At the finish, Wathen was 5 minutes 21 seconds ahead of runner-up
Lean. Whilst Wathen's winning margin was just about comfortable, the battle for 3rd was very
tight. Just 30 seconds separating
Ian Wathen, Bath and Kyte.

Haydn Crocker, Andrew
Buxton, Richard Tucker, Tim Frost, Robert Clark, Edward Hennessy, Dane Palmer and James Morse all completed seven laps at the top of the Sportsman Two-stroke
class. Although Crocker took the win by over three minutes from Buxton, the fastest lap was produced by a rapid Palmer with a time of 19 minutes and 56
seconds. The closest winning margin of the day though came in the Sportsman Four-stroke competition with Adrian Francis completing three gruelling hours of
riding, a total of seven laps, but still being just a very tight 18 seconds
in front of Mark Woodman.
In the always popular Veterans
class, forty five eager, determined riders came under starters orders at Chavenage.
Gerald Poole,Jerry Adams and Martin Coleman led the
way, completing a total of nine laps. At the chequered flag, Poole took the
win, over 9 minutes ahead of Adams whilst Coleman was a further 5 minutes behind in 3rd.The next round of fantastic Midwest MCC action is scheduled for the 18th March when the battle continues for honours in the Hewitt National cross country championship.
