 GETTING STARTED @ www.dirtybiking.co.uk
GUIDE TO GETTING STARTED - HOW & WHERE TO RIDE!

It's Hard for Beginners!
Most people get started in a sport or hobby, through knowing someone who is already involved in that particular area of interest . This page is aimed primarily at those who are not in the know and literally do not know how to get started, what they need or where to ride!

So How can I Start?
If your very young and want to race, plus dad wants to get you riding. First contact either the BSMA or YSMA. Check out age groups, classes and machine sizes etc. - before you spend a penny. You will find that they are all very helpful, and will point or advise you in the correct direction to get started. (See Organizations)
For the very young who just want to play ride. There are lots of practice tracks and Trail parks all over the country nowadays. These are usually well organized and with excellent track safety procedures. DON'T just turn up on local forestry or waste land with your new bargain play bike!
Why not? - Lots of reasons why not. It is also probably illegal. Illegal riding by 'cowboys', loses the use of LOTS of tracks and places to ride every year through landowners and authorities getting angry and hitting back at us by preventing off-road events and getting lanes closed for acces. So then where will YOU ride when you get older? It is getting much harder every year to get permission to hold events, so don't screw it up for everyone. Finally bear in mind, there will be no first aid in attendance, if you or your loved one gets hurt, the consequences could be serious. If you must ride like this ask a local farmer, they nearly all say OK if your polite and give them notice. Tell someone where your going to ride and when you should be back.
(See Where to Ride)

Never ride without safety clothing - Correct riding gear is best. Although expensive new, it can be bought really cheap at youth motocross races. But if this is not possible, a good helmet, gloves, sturdy boots and body armour or a thick jacket should always be worn.  (See Organizations)
I am older and want to start racing or Trail riding - See the 'Organizations' pages, select your choice of riding usage and contact the relevant body. (See Organizations)
I got a dirt bike and want to practice - DON'T just turn up on local forestry or waste land with your new bargain play bike! (See above.) Find a good legal track near you. (See Where to Ride)
I want to race, how do I join a club?  - Glance at the 'Clubs' webpages for secretary contact addresses and info, or make contact through Organizations. (See the Clubs)

Where Can I Ride?

The situation with many new tracks opening and then closing down fairly soon afterwards, plus various organisers changing their phone numbers, regularly means that keeping an up to date list here is not practical. But the good news is that a large, and currently fairly accurate update on UK practice tracks is available at 'www.mxtrax.co.uk' .

Lower Ashdown farm, Blewberry between Oxford and Reading? There's a great MX track through the woods and over large hills in the open. They're open all day Sunday and it costs around £8. The farmer's called Peter Blackhouse. 01235 850144

There's also the Docklands track. It's small and dusty but with lots of tight turns - good for MX training. 0207 473 4434

There's Reading Trail Park, junction 11 off the M4. The ground is rock hard and the jumps have become pretty sharp but it's still a good laugh. It's one to take care on. 01189 314976

I think there's a track in Kent called the Joyce Green something?? Best off calling a bike shop down there.

Wildtracks a brilliant track up Cambridge way. Well worth the drive. 01638 751918

Golding Barn raceway near Brighton. It has a good website, the address is http://www.goldingbarnraceway.co.uk Depending how far East that you are there is also a practice track at Popham (between Basingstoke and Winchester). Also Matchams Park at Ringwood, both of these have details in the TMX.
