XR400 Performance Booster

The following tips were kindly sent in by 'Tracker' of Biker's Chat'n'Help Forum, in response to a question from Jonny regarding boosting Honda XR400 performance.

('Biker' can not vouch for any of the following modifications personally.)

Tracker Speaks -

Jonny I bought a XR400 new last February and have done a few mods which improved it and made it a nicer bike to ride, also as a bonus they are all free, or very cheap.

1st - Remove airbox snorkle.

2nd - Remove exhaust insert, the bike will now be too loud and will not run smoothly (see next step).

3rd - (a must do!) Have a bush made 38mm diameter approx 25mm thick, bore a hole 25mm insert suitable pipe about 175mm long (I used some stainless I had 25mm outside diameter 22mm bore) and weld to bush, have about 25mm of pipe on one side of bush. You will have to drill and tap outside of bush to be able to use the original mounting holes. (See Diag.)

No re-jetting is required as bike is already jetted rich.

4th - Another mod is to remove front exhaust pipes and grind excess welds the aim is to get the same size bore on both pipes, this gives better performance mid range. Hope this helps.

We at 'BW' would like to thank 'Tracker' for his contribution.
